5. Tianying, China
Tianying is a small town in the Chinese province of Anhui with about 30,000 people living there; it should not be confused with Tianjin. It’s a significant lead source for China despite its small size, and because of loose controls, it’s also very filthy. This pollution is made worse by the government’s lax policies regarding industry, especially battery recycling. Over 140,000 people suffer from anemia and kidney impairment as a result of the dangerously high levels of lead in the environment. There has been no improvement noted despite the few efforts made to address the issue.
