1. Citarum River, Indonesia
Once the biggest river on Java Island, the Citarum River in Indonesia has become highly polluted. The waste from thousands of textile factories is the main reason it’s filled with waste instead of flowing water. There are places where the pollution is so bad that the water disappears below the surface of dead animals, plastic, and waste. Because metal and other dangerous elements are present in the water, the pollution affects about 25 million people who use the river for their water, causing a major health risk.
