7. Shell Beach, Shark Bay, Western Australia
Shell Beach, which is hidden in Western Australia’s Shark Bay UNESCO World Heritage site, attracts with its expansive stretch of white cockleshells that reach depths of up to 30 feet. This unusual beach which stretches 60 km along the L’Haridon Bight and is 45 km southeast of Denham features shells from the frum erratum cockle species. L’Haridon Bight’s extreme saltiness promotes uncontrolled warm addition, which causes the development of coquina which is a type of limestone. This incredible beach which was once mined for building materials in Denham is one of only two in the world made completely of shells.
