3. The Christian Legacy: A Glimpse into the Roots of Protestantism in 19th-Century Korea
In the 19th century, Protestant Christianity was introduced to Korea by European, American, and Canadian missionaries and has since taken root, particularly in the northern part of the peninsula. Before 1945, Pyongyang was the second-largest city in East Asia by Christian population, after Manila. Many of the present-day Christians in the DPRK fall from leading business and intellectual families who fought against Japanese rule during colonial rule, which is why they are allowed to carry on their family tradition in the largely atheistic country.
